I say John Thompson. Great coach, yes, at least until the mid 90s. He didn't adapt to the changing college game, lost control of almost all of his top recruits from AI through Brunner, and is a continuing anchor on the program...

But at least Thompson stepped down. Esh is given a contract extension....

agreed, but I blame the extension on JT's presence. He casts a very long shadow over the program...

I say the whole school its all about academics more so now.Not that that is a bad reason, not all kids are going to the nba so they try to get them an education'unfortunately for our selfishness bball gets lost in the mix now.As for J.T.losing control of certain kids most were bad already, and he helped more than he lost. And if jt can't correct a kid ,he either didn't want too,or basically no one could. If he stopped going to visit recruits to come to gtown ,thats when he should have gotten out.

I think the desire of the adminstration to keep the legend John Thompson happy by keeping "his boy" Craig Esherick as coach is at the root of the problem. I think Coach Esherick could have a string of mediocre/poor years and they would still keep them around. They are being too loyal to his mentor. I think a coaching change needs to be made for this program to get better sooner than later. This teams plays so undisciplined in late game situations, costing them chances to win some games against good teams. This all points back to poor coaching. Who is with me on the need for a coaching change?

In my opinion sans defense, Eshs' hoya teams play the same turnover, no offensive structure type game coach Thompsons' teams played. Difference is, JT's teams usually had an dominant center to cover the over playing guards mistakes and also they were just to damn talented from 1-10 for most teams to handle. They were the Duke of the 80's, remember when the hoyas would press...it was as if they had 10 guys on the floor and I swear to you it seems as if they would score at least 30pts a night just by scoring on the other teams turnovers.

The game has changed dramatically in the last 10-15 years. There are so few true post men and centers in both the nba and college. We need to understand that the college game is dominated by guards now and recruit with that as a priority. Look at the top 5 times in the country right now. Each team has either a dominant guard (not necessarily PG as in the case of Kentucky) or an experienced backcourt and in many cases both. I would take a premier guard over a premier big man in any recruiting situation. Look at our team with Sweets. Half the time we cant even get it into him. A player like TJ Ford or Chris Thomas would keep us in many more games by dictating tempo and providing easy looks.
